Comparing in maths.
At the beginning of this term, year 1 were working hard in maths to compare different things. This is an important stage in mathematical understanding and we will often talk about things that may have the same or different properties. This supports children's deeper understanding of mathematical concepts as they can then reason about things rather than simply say what they are. For example, a hexagon has six straight sides and six corners - this is a known fact. To dig deeper we can compare it to a pentagon - How is it different? How is it the same? You can try this at home too. It's often surprising what more we can gain from learning by just saying 'What's the same, what's different?
