2J Super Scientists: Working Scientifically
This term we are learning about Everyday Materials building on our knowledge laid in Year 1. First 2J generated a question they wanted test e.g. Which material would be best to fix a hole in the fireman's bucket (links to GFOL).
The children made their predictions for which materials would be waterproof or not. Then we carried out an illustrative experiment (Mr Jell helping/modelling how to work scientifically) and we discussed how we can make it a fair test e.g. keep all variables the same except changing the material each time.
The following week the children wanted to test which material was the most absorbent. This time they were let loose to carry out their experiment themselves. The children delegated different roles amongst their group e.g. measuring monitor, recording monitor, equipment monitor etc... so they could learn to collaborate, support and exchange skills.
By the look of Dylan's and Kayden's faces Science is anything but boring!
